COMMEMORATIVE COINS
Riga - the capital of Latvia in the heart of the Baltic - is preparing to honour the 800th anniversary of its inception. In celebration, the Bank of Latvia in co-operation with the British Royal Mint is proud to present a series of eight silver 10 latu commemorative coins, one for each century.

Based on original historical materials, the series of commemorative coins has been conceptually designed by illustrating the essential events of each century in miniature. Bishop Albert, the leader of the Christian Crusade to the Baltic and the founder of Riga, is the series' first poignant symbol on the coin's reverse. A golden ship in the coat of arms of the Big Guild symbolizes the wealth the Hanseatic alliance brought to Riga, while the 15th century's most famous sculpture of St. Christopher - Lielais Kristaps, a patron saint for all ferrymen and fishermen, would greet Riga's visitors for many centuries to come.

The coins' obverses demonstrate the historical permutations of the city's Coat of Arms: from 1226, bearing symbols of the Papal curia's power - all the way to 1925, for a capital city in an independent Latvia.

The silver coins "Riga 800" will be valuable gifts and remembrances of Riga to be treasures forever.

The coins "Riga 800" are avaiable at several hotels, banks, jewelery and souvenir shops in the centre of Riga, as well as at Riga Airport.
All commemorative coins of the Bank of Latvia can be purchased from the Bank, address: K.valdemara 2a, Riga.
