Dear chairman,
As a member of Amnesty International, which, you may know, is opposed
to Violation of human rights regardless of the ideology of the country in
which they are committed, I am concerned about Vasif Sirazhudinovich
Meylanov.
I understand Mr. Meylanov was arrested on 25th Janyary 1980 in
Makhachkala for seeking to exercise, in a non-violent manner, his right to
freedom of expression.
Was this not contravention of the United Nations International Covenant
of Civil and Political Rights (1966) and on Social and Economic and Cultural
Rights signed by the USSR which came into force in 1976?
I believe Mr. Meylanov is now in internal exile and I trust you will
ensure that his legal rights to unlimited correspondence will be observed
and that efforts are being made to find him work in accordance with his
qualifications.
I write in the spirit of friendship which has recently been evident at
the meeting between our Prime-Minister and your Mr. Gorbachov and wish that
1988 is a peaceful year for us all.
