Latvian Museum of Culture Dauderi
People who come to our museum usually say that they feel here some special aura. The museum is located far from the centre in the quiet environment. For several hours our guests feel like they have escaped from the fuss of the big city and they relax and enjoy the pacifying atmosphere.

The building of the museum is a 100 years old and has a long history. In the end of the XIX century German owners of brewery located at the site built this beautiful red-brick mansion. From 1937 till 1940 the first Latvian president Karlis Ulmanis lived here. In his times the house was surrounded by a huge garden - nowadays it is quite neglected. Then the house changed owners many times and for some period even housed a kindergarden.

And in 1990 the history of Latvian Museum of Culture "Dauderi" started. The museum's reserves are based on Gaidis Graudinsh' vast collection of various items of Latvian culture. He is Latvian man who emigrated to Germany. He made a significant contribution to preserving Latvian culture, having presented his precious collection to the museum.

Glassware, porcelain, paintings of prominent Latvian painters, badges of honour of mayors, judges, prosecutors, firemen, awards, cups, medals, badges of students' societies, books on ethnography published by "trimda" - Latvian exiles, rare photographs... All these items mainly date back to the 20-30's and you can feel the very atmosphere of those times. Mini-cameras "Minox" manufactured by VEF factory in the end of the 30's and displayed here were well-known in the whole world.

The museum is specially proud of Karlis Ulmanis' study with his table and chair. The portrait of Karlis Ulmanis painted by Janis Rikmanis for a long time was kept in some antique shop. Daughter of the painter Mara Rikmane found it and together with her friends bought it out and presented to our museum.

One of the latest gifts also has its own story. When ambassador of Russia Mr.Rannykh was leaving Latvia in the end of 1996 he found items once belonged to Latvian general Balodis, bought them and presented to our museum. So the history of our Museum of Latvian culture is going on.
