The traceroute describes the information packet's route to the chosen
Internet host by listing all the network stations and routers along
the way. The route's "length" is indicated by the number of those
centers or so called "hop count". The connection quality to each
networkstation is tested 3 times by sending a special information
packet, which generates in return an answer package (ping). The
connection channel's through-put capacity can be evaluated by the
variance between round trip times (shown in seconds) on each line.
Every star instead of a numeric value indicates that a packet has not
been received within 3 seconds which means information was lost or
serious connection problems occured.
The fastest and best quality connection will have:
- fewer hops;
- minimal variance between the 3 round-trip times for each network station;
- no stars (*) appearing in place of a numeric value
You can test your existing Internet connection by following the given examples:
open your operation system's 'command prompt' enter one of the following
commands according to your operation system:
win95 and NT: tracert www.yahoo.com
OS/2: tracerte www.yahoo.com
UNIX: traceroute www.yahoo.com
