EUnet and RealNetworks team up to turn the Internet into true mass broadcast medium

Amsterdam and Seattle, November 10, 1997:
EUnet and RealNetworks announce European partnership for high performance RealAudio and RealVideo distribution

Europe's largest Internet Service Provider EUnet and RealNetworks, the leader in streaming audio and video for the Internet, have signed an agreement through which EUnet becomes a strategic partner for RealNetworks in Europe. The companies are also to join forces in selling streaming services based on RealNetworks' technology.

The agreement means that EUnet is able to deliver cost-effective, high-quality audio and video services at a pan-European level. Intended to meet the growing demand of EUnetdeliver audio and video to large scale audiences over the Internet.

New era

Involving such major players in the market, the agreement represents a significant milestone in the brief history of the Internet. It combines EUnet's global Internet connectivity - one of the world's largest and fastest backbones - with RealNetworks' multimedia streaming technology.

Explains Paul Ayres, RealNetworks' Managing Director for Europe. "In a similar way to how television and radio infrastructures are created to serve the masses, RealNetworks and EUnet have formed a partnership that will result in the introduction of a European Internet broadcast infrastructure."

Exciting, more expressive media

The far-reaching agreement continues EUnet's role as a pioneer shaping the Internet of tomorrow. "We believe that real-time multimedia broadcasting is going to be one of the most exciting applications on the Net," states Johan Helsingius, EUnet International's Director of Product Development and Marketing. "It adds a whole new dimension to traditional broadcasting methods and allows media professionals to migrate to completely new, exciting and more expressive forms on the Net.

"Following our tradition of working together with other industry leaders and leading-edge technology providers, it is natural for EUnet to partner RealNetworks, who are fast becoming the de facto industry standard in this area. With our shared vision of Internet development, we can provide the best solutions for professionals requiring an active presence on the Internet."
